Our Past

In 1983, a group of railroad enthusiasts and model railroad hobbyists organized a club to pool their talents and ideas culminating in the construction of of an operating display. And thus the Beaver County Model Railroad and Historical Society was formed and over the course of the next ten years the club would regularly get visitors during our annual open house events with its headquarters being in the New Century Bank building in Freedom, PA.

In 1993, the club had it’s final holiday show in Freedom. After ten years society members now had the arduous task of disassembling the display that they had worked so hard to build. The owners of the building wanted new tenants, and after failing that demolished the building.

After a year of searching, in Late 1994, The society had finally found a suitable location for its next layout. A former Pittsburgh and Lake Erie freight station in Monaca. Over the course of the few years membership would build a new layout with reconditioned elements from the original display.

Our Society today

Today we are still located in that historic freight station. Our societies main focus as written out in our bylaws are as follows,

1) To promote the hobby of model railroading for the benefit of its members and to make the public aware of the merits of the hobby. 2) To educate the public in the history of railroading.

To this end we maintain an operating display that showcases what railroading is and its importance to our economy and local business. Our Display is always slowly being worked on and updated. we also have a collection of railroad artifacts with the earliest dating from 1926 and the latest dating from 2006.
